Hiking in Monegros

Monegros is an area with many opportunities for hiking providing pleasant surprises for lovers of nature. Hiking is the best and easiest way to enjoy and learn about this immense desert of sandstone which is unique in Europe.

Its hills, plains, canyons and a huge expanse of desert dotted with ponds, lagoons and salt marshes, have favoured the formation of a habitat where many species exist that are found nowhere else on earth.

In Villanueva de Sigena there are many miles of trails laid out by quiet lanes and paths away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

We propose several interesting tours:

1. Route of the Monastery of Sijena
From the Royal Monastery ascend to the top of the Sierra de Villanueva to a mountain hut to rest and then descend to the point of departure through the old medieval bridge.
Duration: Approximately 5 hours

2. Route of the Royal Monastery of Sijena to La Cartuja de las Fuentes
On this route we can link the two most important monuments of Monegros.
Duration: Approximately 4 hours

3. Route of the Hermitage of Santiago to the Monastery of Sijena
This route links two Romanesque monuments. It crosses the mountains of Sariñena, Albalatillo, Castejón de Monegros (with its shrine in honour of St. Michael), Mount Sena and finally arrives in Villanueva de Sigena.
Duration: Approximately 6 hours

4. Route of Jubierre
A few kilometres from Villanueva de Sigena, Jubierre is one of the most stunning areas in the County of Monegros. Its breathtaking scenery is the result of intense erosion that has led to all kinds of carvings and unique forms and has favoured the emergence of an important network of ravines. There are five low-difficulty marked routes that visitors can go hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding on accessing the five emblematic stone monuments of Jubierre: Tozal de la Cobeta, Tozales de los Pedregales, Tozal de Colasico, Tozal Solitario, Mirador Oriental y Peña Altar.
Duration: Varies

5. Tour of La Laguna de Sariñena
La Laguna de Sariñena is a destination for some 12,000 birds during the winter. It is also a resting and feeding area for over 100,000 birds included in their migration route. This route starts from the bird observatory tower on a circular route around the lake. (11 km)
