Hunting and Fishing

HUNTING

The steppes of Monegros with their large size and low population density mean that this region is the perfect place for hunting both big and small game. The fauna is diverse and this environment contains plenty of wild boars, hares, rabbits, foxes, partridges and quail. For lovers of hunting Monegros is one of the few still unspoiled landscapes to practice this sport.

FISHING

A short distance from Villanueva de Sigena is the Mequinenza Reservoir, unique in Europe for fishing, especially for catfish fishing. Since their illegal introduction to the Ebro in 1974, Mequinenza has become the cradle of catfish in Europe. It is a fishing paradise and the number one destination for anglers from around the world who come to stand alongside these giants that can exceed 2.3 meters in length and weigh 100 kg.

Besides the catfish species such as common carp, pike, or black bass are also found. Fishing for carp is increasingly attracting visitors to this river because their size often exceeds 70 cm in length. Walleye fishing is also a symbol of the Ebro.

Although the Ebro is open for fishing all year round the best months for catfish are July, August and September. For carp fishing the best months are from March to November. For walleye the best months are from January to April and from October to December.

In the town of Mequinenza you can buy a fishing license for the year, rent fishing equipment and boats or hire a guide to accompany you on this unforgettable adventure.
